EVENT DESCRIPTION

This summer, visitors have an opportunity take a deeper dive into the history and ecology of Provincetown Harbor with tours aboard the Dolphin Fleet guided by naturalists from the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS).

The new Science in the Harbor Tours are offered every Friday morning from 10:30 to noon, beginning July 11 and ending August 29.

CCS scientists and educators will tell the story of Provincetown Harbor through the lens of the scientific research they conduct. Passengers will learn about the natural history of the harbor, from the vast microscopic world of plankton that feeds the harbor’s rich ecosystem to the seabirds, seals, sharks and whales that visitors enjoy.

CCS guides will also examine the harbor’s history, both above and below the water. Using sonar imagery, they’ll guide visitors over the harbor’s submerged wrecks, and they’ll explain the stories behind its historic lighthouses and landmarks.

Guests will discover how the complex geology of the harbor led to the development of early fishing and whaling industries.  They’ll learn about the historic and ecological transformation of the harbor from a whaling capital to the whale watching and whale rescue center of the East Coast.
