Center for Coastal Studies Open House

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) will host a family-friendly Open House at the Hiebert Marine Laboratory in Provincetown on Saturday, May 30th, from 11 am to 2 pm.

This community event invites visitors of all ages to tour the lab, meet CCS scientists and staff, and explore hands-on exhibits and interactive demonstrations showcasing CCS research on North Atlantic right and humpback whales, seals, fisheries, coastal geology, marine debris & plastics, and water quality.

Visitors will learn about how the Marine Animal Entanglement Response team (MAER) responds to entangled whales and turtles. There will also be talks about Spinnaker, “the humpback whale with a tale to tell.”  Spinnaker was a humpback whale that died due to an entanglement, despite repeated efforts by MAER to help her.  Her skeleton is preserved and displayed in the atrium of the Hiebert Marine Lab where she delivers a powerful message about the lives of whales in the modern world.

For 50 years, the Center for Coastal Studies has conducted science that matters: independent, field-based research that advances understanding of marine ecosystems and helps inform how they are studied, protected and cared for. Grounded in long-term observation and real-world application, this work continues to shape the future of our oceans and coastal communities.

This is a free family event. No registration is required. Nearby paid parking is available at the Grace Hall Parking Lot, accessible off Shankpainter Road.
