JUNETEENTH 2023: CELEBRATION & COOKOUT

Unitarian Universalist Meeting House Lawn: 236 Commercial Street
The celebration will include a range of speeches and performances
A community ceremony and cookout celebrating the anniversary of Juneteenth and the abolition of slavery will be held in Provincetown on Monday, June 19, 2023 on the lawn of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House from 2pm-5pm
On this day in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, some 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas did not know they had their freedom until Union soldiers came to the city and told them so. Juneteenth is the celebration of the completion of the 1863 proclamation freeing all enslaved peoples in the United States.
The Outer Cape community is invited to join this year’s Juneteenth Provincetown celebration, a grand coalition of Black/African Americans, Jamaican/Jamaican-Americans, Indigenous Persons, People of Color, young leaders from the Provincetown IB School, allied community members, organizers, and leaders for a celebration of resilient honesty featuring speakers and performers from the outer Cape community.
The event’s organizers note the pressing importance of honoring the Juneteenth Celebration this year as a new report from the Anti-Defamation League states that hate crimes have increased significantly here in Massachusetts between 2021 and 2022. For example, there were 34 white supremacist events in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, there was a 71% uptick in the prevalence of White supremacist propaganda in Massachusetts, only behind Texas in that regard. The Juneteenth Provincetown organizing committee wants to demonstrate that Provincetown is taking a strong stance against this and other disturbing hate trends by embracing anti-racist actions that span from personal awareness to structural interventions.
Suggested attire: Red, black, and green from the Pan-African flag.
